The best way to approach fitness with Diabetes. Your goals should go beyond managing a condition.

Exercise has proven benefits for clients with Diabetes. My role as a Personal Fitness Trainer is to help my clients find the best ways to exercise for their unique likes and needs as well as to keep progressing in their fitness.

If you want to know more about the symptoms, treatments and life with Diabetes; read more here.

Precautions
Talk to your Diabetic Healthcare Team (your GP, Specialist or Nurse team) before undertaking exercise. Their advice will be invaluable (see the points below as well) As long as your Diabetes is well understood and managed and you have full clearance from your care team, there's no reason you can't get going.

Preparing to Exercise
Hydration, checking your blood glucose level and bringing a suitable snack and/or medication if you start to feel unwell.

During your workout
Check your blood glucose level every 20 to 30 minutes, if you have a smart monitor that can be as little as checking your phone or setting an alert at an appropriate level.

Post exercise
After exercise, your blood glucose level may continue to decrease. Monitor and treat accordingly as directed by your Dr. Low glycaemic index foods can help slow this decrease.

Timing of Exercise
Training late in the day can lead to an overnight hypoglycaemic attack (low blood glucose). A Personal Trainer can help plan your exercise for when you're feeling your best as well as aftercare.

Ultimately, every person has a different response to exercise. Keeping a diary can help to figure out the best ways, times and strategies to exercise. Work with your care team and Personal Trainer to identify the most beneficial ways for you.

All of the tips and advice you can get from a Diabetic Healthcare Team will be about managing your condition. I work with these teams in order to deliver the most effective fitness experience. Remember my mantra - GENERIC EXERCISES BUILD GENERIC FITNESS. My diabetic clients have goals that go beyond managing their condition. They might want to run a marathon, or climb a mountain and Diabetes shouldn't prevent anyone reaching their goals. As long as everyone in the team works together to support the client.
